âThere is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.â (Romans 8:1)
In Scripture, condemnation means God declares a person guilty and assigns the punishment that guilt deserves. But for those who are in Christ, God does the opposite. He declares them NOT guilty â fully forgiven, fully accepted â all because of the sacrifice Jesus Christ offered on the Cross âď¸.
Everyone deserves condemnation because everyone has sinned. But Jesus stepped into our place, took our guilt upon Himself, and bore the punishment we could never survive. Because of His death and resurrection, God now looks at those who are in Christ and says:
âNo condemnation. The penalty has already been paid.â
This is the heart of the gospel: God declares us righteousânot because of anything weâve done, but entirely because of what Christ has done for us. âď¸
Jesus Christ Himself declared that HE ALONE is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE and NOBODY gets to the FATHER (OR HEAVEN) but through HIM. (John 14:6).
What does the Bible say about âthe fleshâ?

The Body (Flesh) Is Dead Because of Sin
Scripture teaches that humanityâs physical bodies are mortal and corrupted because of sin (Romans 8:10). We still experience weakness, suffering, decay, and death because we live in fallen flesh.
Nothing Good Dwells in the Flesh
Paul declares plainly: âNothing good dwells in the fleshâ (Romans 7:18). The flesh represents both our physical mortality and the sinful condition inherited from the Fall.
The Deeds and Desires of the Flesh
The flesh expresses itself through sinful behaviors and cravings:
- Deeds of the flesh: sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry, witchcraft, hostility, jealousy, anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, and similar things (Galatians 5:19â21).
- Sinful cravings: the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit (Galatians 5:17; Ephesians 2:3).
- Temptation: each personâs own desires draw them away and tempt them (James 1:14â15).
- Rebellion: the flesh naturally resists God (Galatians 5:17).
The Flesh Cannot Please God
Scripture is clear:
- Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 15:50).
- Those who are in the flesh cannot please God (Romans 8:8).
- Setting the mind on the flesh is death (Romans 8:6).
- Living according to the flesh leads to death (Romans 8:13).
The flesh is powerless to produce righteousness. It cannot obey God, cannot submit to His law, and cannot save itself. Because all people everywhere have sinned and fallen short of Godâs glory (Romans 3:23), all are naturally subject to eternal death. This is the universal human condition.
The Law Exposes the Sin Nature
The Law of Moses reveals and stirs up the sin that already lives in the flesh (Romans 7:5). It shows us our guilt but cannot cure the flesh or free us from its power.
God condemned sin in the flesh
Romans 8:3: For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5đď¸
Thankfully, God gave us A WAY that leads to SALVATION âď¸ (SAVED from ETERNAL DEATH)!
God passed a judicial sentence against sin itselfâpunishing it fully and finallyâin the physical body of Jesus Christ. Jesus took on real human flesh, entering the same arena where sin had always ruled. But He came only in the likeness of sinful fleshâmeaning He was fully human yet without sin. This allowed Him to stand in our place as the perfect representative.
Jesusâ body became the sacrificial offering that bore the penalty of human sin. God executed judgment on sin in Christâs human body, not in a distant heavenly courtroom. Sin was dragged onto its home turfâhuman fleshâand defeated there. At the cross, God poured out the full penalty for sin on Jesus, so that sin itself was judged, sentenced, and stripped of its power. đđť HALLELUJAH!
Because sin has already been condemned in Christâs flesh:
- There is now no condemnation for those in Christ (Romans 8:1).
- Sinâs legal claim over you is broken.
- Sinâs power to enslave you is defeated.
- You are not defined by your failuresâsin was judged somewhere else, in someone elseâs body (JESUS!)âď¸
Romans 8:2: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
This is definitely GOOD NEWS FOR THE BELIEVER! (The word GOSPEL means good news)!!!
What does it mean to be IN CHRIST?
To be in Christ means that God has spiritually joined you to Him just as a branch joins to a vine. đżBecause you share HIS DEATH (crucified with CHRIST) đ, you now actively share His RESURRECTED life, His righteousness, His inheritance, and His victory.
This is the core of salvation. âď¸
CHRIST CREDITS EVERYTHING HE ACCOMPLISHED TO YOU:
- His death â your old self died
- His resurrection â you walk in new life
- His righteousness â you are justified
- His sonship â you are adopted
- His victory â you are free from condemnation
This is why Paul can say, âThere is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ.â
The Bible is clear; there is only ONE solution for the flesh/sin problem. We must be born again into a NEW NATUREđŚ˘, and in so doing, SPIRITUALLY CRUCIFY the flesh and all its desires WITH CHRIST so that we can walk in Newness of Life (FREEDOM FROM SIN).
Those who are BORN AGAIN belong to a New Realm (HEAVENLY). Paul contrasts two realms:
- In Adam (earthly) there is flesh: sin and death â resulting in condemnation (ETERNAL DEATH) đ
- In Christ (Heavenly) there is Spirit: righteousness and LIFE â resulting in FREEDOM from sin (ETERNAL LIFE) đż
Every human is born âIn Adam.â Every believer is reborn âIn Christ.â Christ living in you and you living in HIM (INTERTWINED FOREVER) is what it means to be reborn in Christ (born again).
đ These are two sides of the same union. The New Testament refers to the believerâs union in Christ over 200 times!
2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; 𦢠the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. đŚ˘
Colossians 3:3:Â For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. đ
John 14:20: On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you.đż
Water Baptism SYMBOLIZES the Believerâs UNION WITH CHRIST đŚ
Water baptism does NOT save a person. We are saved by faith in Christ through GRACE (Godâs FREE GIFT OF SALVATION). So why get baptized? Christians receive baptism to publicly identify themselves with Christ and to symbolize the spiritual realities that God has already accomplished inside them. By getting baptized, a believer declares, âI belong to Jesus.â đż
Acts 10:47: âSurely no one can refuse the water đŚfor these to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spiritđď¸ just as we did, can he?â 48 And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.
Water Baptism Reveals the Believerâs Death to the Old Life
Water Baptism symbolizes the believerâs union with Jesus Christâbeing united with Him in His death, burial, and resurrection. This imagery comes primarily from Romans 6:3â4, where Paul writes: âWe were therefore buried with him through baptism into deathđ, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.
The idea here is that prior to becoming a believer, the âold selfâ (sin nature) is in full control of a personâs life. This is the natural state of all human beings (born physically into a sin nature). However, once a person RECEIVES the TRUTH about Jesus Christ and accepts Jesus as their LORD and SAVIOR, they join with Christ spiritually in His death, burial and resurrection. No more separation from God! đ
John 5:24: Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears đđťMy word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life đżand will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life
John 17:3: Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
The term âknowâ in John 17:3 (above) describes having an INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP with GOD, not just âhead knowledgeâ.
When we BELIEVE in Godâs ONLY SON Jesus Christ for the complete forgiveness of all sin and make HIM Lord of our life, then we enter into an INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP with God through CHRIST. The Bible likens the believerâs union with Christ to a MARRIAGE. Jesus described a marriage as âthe two become ONE FLESHâ.
Matthew 19:4: And He answered and said to them, âHave you not read that He who made them at the beginning âmade them male and female,â 5and said, âFor this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one fleshâ? 6Â So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined togetherđż, let not man separate.â
Human marriage is SUPPOSED to be a picture đˇ of Godâs RELATIONSHIP with mankind, SHOWING that we are CALLED to JOIN TOGETHER with HIM THROUGH CHRIST. đżThis is our ONLY PATH to ETERNAL LIFE. This intertwining can only be achieved by BELIEVING in the SON OF GOD. âď¸
Ephesians 5:31: For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. 32Â This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church
Ephesians 2:8: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of Godđ; 9Â not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
New Creation đŚ˘
Instantly, God creates something that never existed before: you in Christ, CHRIST IN YOU. You donât get a spiritual makeoverâyou become new.
You now live from your new positionđď¸
It is our UNION with Christ that empowers the believer to turn from fleshly desires. Being âin Christâ is not something you grow intoâit is something you grow from. đđż
Union with Christ is the engine of sanctification. Sanctification isnât you trying harder, becoming more religious, or climbing a moral ladder. It is the life of Christ in you flows through you because you are united to Him.
Union breaks sinâs dominion; sanctification breaks sinâs habits. âSin shall not have dominion over you.â Sin is no longer your master. You still fight sin, but you fight as someone who is free, not enslaved. Union joins you to Christâs death and resurrection; this is the heart of sanctification. Your sin died with Christ. Your old self was crucified.
Sanctification is learning to say ânoâ to what died. đ
Paul poured his heart into teaching the church about HOW to walk in NEWNESS OF LIFE. 𦢠Cast aside the old sin nature and embrace a life WITH CHRIST!
Regard your sin nature as utterly DEAD so that you can TRULY LIVE WITH CHRIST. Picture it like this: when someone indulges in pornography near a grave, the grave remains indifferent. It feels nothing; itâs dead. The same goes for gluttony. Pile mountains of food on a grave and what happens? Absolutely NOTHING! And greed? Stuff countless bills at a grave and observe â again, NOTHING. The grave holds no allure for lust, pride, food, or money. It stands untouched by temptation. Itâs DEAD. This is the essence of being âdead to sinâ; live like your sin nature was crucified alongside Jesus Christ. đâď¸
Romans 6:11: So you too, consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 5:24: Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Paul describes this as âputting OFF the old man and putting ON the NEW MANââŚthe NEW CREATION that occurred when you received Jesus Christ â NOW AND FOREVER INTERTWINED with the GOD OF LIFE. đżđ Dead to sin, alive in Christ.
1 John 5:4: For whoever has been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.
Ephesians 4:17: This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heartđ§đťâđŚŻââĄď¸;
19Â who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.
20Â But you have not so learned Christ, 21Â if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22Â that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,
23Â and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Holy Spirit EMPOWERS us to BE OVERCOMERS! đď¸
God expects His children to be overcomers. The call to overcome is a recurring theme in Scripture, especially in Revelation, where Jesus repeatedly urges the churches to âovercomeâ.
As a believer, Faith unites you to Christ, the One who already overcame the world (John 16:33). His victory becomes your victory. Faith is not inner strengthâit is trusting the One who conquered sin, death, and Satan and ALIGNING yourself with HIM.
Overcoming includes:
- resisting the worldâs temptations (1 John 2:16)
- rejecting false teaching (1 John 4:1â6)
- persevering through trials and pressure
- living in obedience and love
- refusing to be shaped by the worldâs values
This victory is certain, though not effortless.
Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ; âď¸ and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
To be âCrucified with Christâ is to trust in Him, SPIRITUALLY sharING in His death âď¸and, thereby, also partaking in His RESURRECTION LIFE (Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:6, Romans 7:7). Through faith, believers put their old nature to death by nailing it to the cross with Jesus. This act symbolizes a divine exchange: believers lay aside their self-centered lifeđ and live for God in Christâs righteousness.
Self-rule is replaced by Christâs lordship.
The phrase âcrucified with Christâ âď¸ reveals that a believerâs personal agenda, autonomy, and sinful inclinations have met their end upon the cross. đ
This does not mean that the Christian will never sin; however, we have a HELPER in the HOLY SPIRIT who dwells within us. đď¸ OUR HELPER will direct us away from sin and towards righteous living. HE will convict us of sin and strengthen us to avoid temptation. He will point out danger in our path and will protect us from all evil.
Even so, Satan may ACCUSE US, but WE cannot face trial twice for the same crime (double jeopardy). God already punished HIS SON for OUR CRIMES. As a result, WE are FREE!!!
Donât panic if you feel you are not âworthyâ or if you still have sin in your life. The work of SANCTIFICATION is not instantaneous. It actually takes a lifetime. Our walk with Christ will look a lot different 10, 20, or 30 years from now as we put off more and more sin and put on more and more of Christ.
Philippians 1:6: being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
FAQ: Is Union with Christ the same thing as abiding in Him?
Answer: They are closely related but not identical: âUnion with Christâ is the unchanging reality of your salvation. âAbiding in Christâ is your ongoing experience of that reality through trust, obedience, and dependence.
