Union with Christ: The Key to Spiritual Transformation🦢

The book of Romans passionately proclaims to believers that there is “no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1). In the Bible, condemnation signifies “being declared guilty and destined for punishment by God.” Those who are IN CHRIST will be triumphantly declared NOT GUILTY for their sins, all thanks to the incredible sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the Cross✝️. This is EXTRAORDINARILY GOOD NEWS for the BELIEVER! However, the flip side is equally intense – those who are NOT IN CHRIST JESUS will face the full weight of their own guilt and the impending consequences of God’s judgment!! 😱

Jesus Christ Himself declared that HE ALONE is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE and NOBODY gets to the FATHER (OR HEAVEN) but through HIM. (John 14:6).

What does it mean to be IN CHRIST JESUS? Understanding this truth will help us to better understand WHY believers are declared NOT guilty before God and why NOBODY gets to Heaven BUT THROUGH JESUS.

God condemned sin in the flesh

Romans 8:3: For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, ⁴so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. ⁵🕊️

Let’s unpack the above verse.

The body (flesh) is dead 💀because of sin (Romans 8:10) Humans are mortal, subject to death 💀because of sin. Believers are not yet freed from mortality, weakness, suffering, or bodily decay.

Nothing good dwells in the flesh (Romans 7:18).

Deeds of the flesh: sexual immorality, impurity, indecent behavior, idolatry, witchcraft, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these (Galatians 5:19-21)

The flesh has sinful cravings (Galatians 5:17, Ephesians 2:3)

The flesh tempts us to sin (James 1:14-15)

The flesh desires to rebel against God. (Galatians 5:17)

Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 15:50)

Those who are in the flesh cannot please God (Romans 8:8)

To set the mind on fleshly desires is to set the mind on death 💀(Romans 8:6)

Living according to the flesh will lead to death 💀(Romans 8:13)

The law of Moses EXACERBATES or stirs up the sin nature that dwells in the flesh (Romans 7:5).

Flesh – “the flesh” encapsulates both the physical bodies that humanity inhabits, and the spiritually compromised condition passed down from the Fall.

I think we get the picture. Nothing good dwells in our flesh. The flesh symbolizes our fallen, sinful nature that desires to rebel against God. Scripture tells us that walking or living by the flesh (where the “deeds of the flesh” become our normal lifestyle) will lead to DEATH. 💀 The Bible tells us that ALL PEOPLE EVERYWHERE have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. For this reason, ALL PEOPLE are subject to ETERNAL DEATH.

Romans 3:23: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Thankfully, God gave us A WAY that leads to SALVATION ✝️(SAVED from ETERNAL DEATH)!

Romans 8 says that when Jesus Christ went to the Cross two thousand years ago God condemned sin in the flesh ✝️. This means that God passed a judicial sentence against sin itself—punishing it fully and finally—in the physical body of Jesus Christ. Jesus took on real human flesh, entering the same arena where sin had always ruled. But He came only in the likeness of sinful flesh—meaning He was fully human yet without sin. This allowed Him to stand in our place as the perfect representative.

Jesus’ body became the sacrificial offering that bore the penalty of human sin. God executed judgment on sin in Christ’s human body, not in a distant heavenly courtroom. Sin was dragged onto its home turf—human flesh—and defeated there. At the cross, God poured out the full penalty for sin on Jesus, so that sin itself was judged, sentenced, and stripped of its power. 🙌🏻 HALLELUJAH!

Because sin has already been condemned in Christ’s flesh:

There is now no condemnation for those in Christ (Romans 8:1).
Sin’s legal claim over you is broken.
Sin’s power to enslave you is defeated.
You are not defined by your failures—sin was judged somewhere else, in someone else’s body (JESUS!)✝️

This is definitely GOOD NEWS FOR THE BELIEVER! (The word GOSPEL means good news)!!!

Because the punishment for the sins of the believer has already taken place, believers will not be held accountable for their sin. God took care of that. God HIMSELF has PAID the PUNISHMENT for our sin. However, because we are still in our flesh, we are still subject to sin and all of its consequences – aging, sickness, and death. This will not change until the Last Trump sounds and God TRANSFORMS mortality into IMMORTALITY. This is written. It will happen and it is something to look forward to. However, even while in the flesh, God has SHATTERED the power of the sin nature in the Believer through the POWER of HIS HOLY SPIRIT. This means that AS A BELIEVER, sin wilL no longer have dominion over YOU!

Romans 8:2: For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.

1 John 5:4: For whoever has been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

God expects His children, who have been BORN AGAIN (aka born from above) to be overcomers. The call to overcome is a recurring theme in Scripture, especially in Revelation, where Jesus repeatedly urges the churches to “overcome”.

As a believer, Faith unites you to Christ, the One who already overcame the world (John 16:33). His victory becomes your victory. Faith is not inner strength—it is trusting the One who conquered sin, death, and Satan. Overcoming includes:

resisting the world’s temptations (1 John 2:16)
rejecting false teaching (1 John 4:1–6)
persevering through trials and pressure
living in obedience and love
refusing to be shaped by the world’s values

This victory is certain, though not effortless. It is the natural result of new birth IN CHRIST.

What does it mean to be IN CHRIST?

To be in Christ means you are spiritually joined to Him the way a branch is joined to a vine. 🌿You shared in HIS DEATH💀, and so now you share in His RESURRECTED life, His righteousness, His inheritance, and His victory.

This is the core of salvation. ✝️

Galatians 2:20: I have been crucified with Christ; ✝️ and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

To be “Crucified with Christ” is to trust in Him, SPIRITUALLY sharING in His death ✝️and, thereby, also partaking in His RESURRECTION LIFE (Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:6, Romans 7:7). The idea is that through faith, one’s old nature DIES, having been nailed to the cross with Jesus, symbolizing a divine exchange: the self-centered life is set aside💀, and believers live unto God in Christ’s righteousness.

Self-rule is replaced by Christ’s lordship. The phrase “crucified with Christ” ✝️ reveals that a believer’s personal agenda, autonomy, and sinful inclinations have met their end upon the cross. 💀

Everything Christ accomplished is credited to you:

His death → your old self died
His resurrection → you walk in new life
His righteousness → you are justified
His sonship → you are adopted
His victory → you are free from condemnation

This is why Paul can say, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ.”

The Bible is clear; there is only ONE solution for the flesh/sin problem. We must be born again into a NEW NATURE🦢, and in so doing, SPIRITUALLY CRUCIFY the flesh and all its desires WITH CHRIST so that we can walk in Newness of Life (FREEDOM FROM SIN).

TO BE BORN AGAIN Means You Belong to a New Realm (HEAVENLY). Paul contrasts two realms:

In Adam (earthly) there is flesh: sin and death — resulting in condemnation (ETERNAL DEATH) 💀

In Christ (Heavenly) there is Spirit: righteousness and LIFE – resulting in FREEDOM from sin (ETERNAL LIFE) 🌿

Every human is born “in Adam.” Every believer is reborn “in Christ.”

TO BE REBORN IN CHRIST means Christ Lives in You and You are IN HIM (INTERTWINED FOREVER). 🌿

Paul uses both phrases:

You are in Christ
Christ is in you

These are two sides of the same union. You are wrapped in Him, and He dwells in you.

Doctrine of Spiritual Union with Christ

Galatians 2:20:I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

Spiritually crucifying the flesh is both a past event and present reality. When a person puts their faith and trust in Jesus Christ for the complete forgiveness of ALL of their sin, they are united with CHRIST in his death and resurrection. (Romans 6:6). The concept of “Union with Christ” is a central belief of Christian theology, emphasizing the intimate relationship between believers and Jesus Christ. This union is multifaceted, encompassing both the believer’s incorporation into Christ and Christ’s indwelling presence within the believer. At the heart of this union is LOVE. 💖

Our UNION with Christ is something that each believer should REALLY reflect on and deeply consider because it is the source of so many blessings. Through union with Christ God bestows on the elect all of the saving benefits Christ merited by His Life, Death, and Resurrection. Just to name a few…

Salvation and Justification – Saved from the penalty of sin and being in right standing with God.
Fellowship with God – experiencing God’s Love, truth and Presence in our daily lives.
New Identity and Life – The old “self” is being replaced by a new identity in Christ.
Divine Purpose – The life of each believer is packed with purpose and meaning
Sanctification and holiness – Being renewed into the image of Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit
Peace, joy, and assurance
Empowerment for service – Each believer is given spiritual gifts to use in the service of God’s Kingdom work
The hope of Glory – This hope motivates the believer to live faithfully knowing that through SPIRITUALLY sharing in Christ’s crucifixion and death, we will ALSO share in His resurrection and future inheritance in the Kingdom of God.💖

The Bible says that “Eye has not seen, nor has ear heard, nor has it even entered into the heart of man the things that God has prepared for those who LOVE HIM!” (1 Corinthians 2:9).

The New Testament refers to the believer’s union in Christ over 200 times! Think about it. I often hear people say “I would love to draw near to Christ so He can draw near to me”…and yes, the Bible does say this very thing. However, the Bible ALSO tells us that when you believe in Jesus Christ you become a NEW CREATION, literally JOINED TOGETHER with Christ. You can’t get any closer than that. If you are a believer, then you are IN HIM, and HE is IN YOU!

2 Corinthians 5:17: Therefore if anyone is in Christ, this person is a new creation; 🦢 the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. 🦢

Colossians 3:3:For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 💖

John 14:20: On that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you are in Me, and I in you.🌿

It is our UNION with Christ that empowers the believer to turn from fleshly desires.

Let us reflect on our SPIRITUAL UNION with Christ🦢

Becoming “in Christ” is the heart of salvation. The Bible describes it not as joining a religion, but entering a union with Jesus where His life becomes yours. Scripture shows this happens through three connected realities: hearing the gospel, responding in faith, and being united to Christ by the Holy Spirit.

No one becomes “in Christ” by accident. God uses the message of Christ to call people to Himself.

Romans 10:17: So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

The gospel reveals: ✝️

who Jesus is
what He accomplished
why you need Him
what He offers

This hearing the gospel awakens the heart. 💖

2) FAITH (you believe)💖

Faith is the instrument God uses to unite you to Christ.

Faith is:🌿

trusting Christ alone
relying on His finished work
abandoning self‑righteousness
receiving Him as Lord and Savior

Galatians 3:26: You are all sons (tfj: children) of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

Faith is not a work; it is the empty hand that receives Christ. 👋🏻

3) You are UNITED to Christ by the Holy Spirit 🕊️

This is the moment you become in Christ.

The Spirit places you into: 🕊️

Christ’s death
Christ’s resurrection
Christ’s righteousness
Christ’s body (the Church)

1 Corinthians 12:13: By one Spirit we were all baptized into one body.

This is a spiritual baptism—God Himself joins you to Jesus through the HOLY SPIRIT. 🕊️

John 20:22: And when He (Jesus) had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

Water Baptism SYMBOLIZES the Believer’s UNION WITH CHRIST 💦

Water baptism is not a salvation issue. You can be saved without being baptized with water. So why get baptized? A Christian gets baptized because it publicly identifies us with Christ, and because it symbolizes the spiritual realities that God has already done inside us. Water Baptism is not what saves a person—faith in Christ ✝️does—but water baptism is the God‑given way a believer declares, “I belong to Jesus.”

Acts 10:47: “Surely no one can refuse the water 💦for these to be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit🕊️ just as we did, can he?” ⁴⁸And he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to stay on for a few days.

Baptism symbolizes the believer’s union with Jesus Christ — United WITH Him in His death, burial, and resurrection. This imagery comes primarily from Romans 6:3–4, where Paul writes: “We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death💀, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may walk in newness of life.

The idea here is that prior to becoming a believer, the “old self” (sin nature) is in full control of a person’s life. This is the natural state of all human beings (born physically into a sin nature). However, once a person RECEIVES the TRUTH about Jesus Christ and accepts Jesus as their LORD and SAVIOR, they join with Christ spiritually in His death, burial and resurrection. No more separation from God! 💖 This is what it means to be BORN AGAIN or BORN FROM ABOVE!

John 5:24: Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears 👂🏻My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life 🌿and will not come under judgment. Indeed, he has crossed over from death to life (tfj: united with christ). 🕊️

John 17:3: Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

The term “know” in John 17:3 (above) describes having an INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP with GOD, not just “head knowledge”. When we BELIEVE in God’s ONLY SON Jesus Christ for the complete forgiveness of all sin and make HIM Lord of our life, then we enter into an INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP with God through CHRIST. Imagine it like this. As soon as you REALLY BELIEVE in Jesus Christ, you enter INTO CHRIST and HE into you, like a MARRIAGE relationship. Jesus described a marriage as “the two become ONE FLESH”.

Matthew 19:4^:And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ ⁵and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? ⁶So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together🌿, let not man separate.”

Human marriage is SUPPOSED to be a picture 📷of God’s DESIRED RELATIONSHIP with mankind, that we JOIN TOGETHER with HIM THROUGH CHRIST. 🦢 This is our ONLY PATH to ETERNAL LIFE🌿. This intertwining can only be achieved by BELIEVING in the SON OF GOD. ✝️ Just as marriage is a SACRED UNION between A MAN and A WOMAN, ETERNAL LIFE is a sacred union between God and man. This IS the NEW COVENANT.

Jeremiah 31:31: “Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, ³²not like the covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord.

“For this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord: “I will put My law within them 🌿and write it on their heart🦢; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people💖. (tfj: The Israel of God are the people of God

The NEW COVENANT is NOT like the Mosaic Covenant of LAW which Israel broke. The NEW COVENANT is for ALL PEOPLE – JEW and GENTILE (non-Jew) and is a Covenant of GRACE, ONE in MESSIAH (JESUS). It IS a MARRIAGE COVENANT between God (Jesus Christ) and man.

When we are SPIRITUALLY joined together with God 🌿through FAITH in HIS ONLY SON JESUS CHRIST, we join together in Christ’s DEATH and RESURRECTION. In Christ’s death, our sin DIED WITH CHRIST on the Cross. ✝️Because Jesus Christ bore our sin on the Cross FOR US, the wrath of God has been satisfied. We are no longer under wrath, but under GRACE.

In CHRIST’S FLESH, God condemned the sin that is in OUR flesh ✝️ so that we can be FREE and walk in NEWNESS of LIFE.

Ephesians 2:8: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God🎁; ⁹not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

NEW CREATION🦋

Because our sins DIED with CHRIST up on the CROSS✝️, we are RESURRECTED WITH HIM into NEW LIFE🦢, INTERTWINED with CHRIST for ETERNITY. 🌿This is what it is like to be BORN AGAIN. This NEW LIFE creates a DIFFERENT type of human, one that looks a lot more like our original design. This is a spiritual union, not physical so both men and women can have our “bridegroom JESUS” without worry of “homosexuality”.

Instantly, God creates something that never existed before: you in Christ.

This includes: 🦢

a new heart💖
new desires
new spiritual capacities
a new relationship to sin
a new relationship to God

You don’t get a spiritual makeover—you become new.

This UNION with CHRIST 🌿gives us the POWER to overcome the sin nature that is still in our flesh until the LAST TRUMPET sounds.

You now live from your new position🕊️

Being “in Christ” is not something you grow into—it is something you grow from. 💖🌿

You don’t work your way into Christ. You work out what is already true because you are in Him. Union with Christ is the engine of sanctification. Sanctification isn’t you trying harder, becoming more religious, or climbing a moral ladder. It is the life of Christ in you expressing itself through you because you are united to Him.

At union:

your old self dies💀
you become a new creation 🦢
you receive Christ’s righteousness 💖
you are adopted🌿
you are indwelt by the Spirit 🕊️

Sanctification is simply learning to live out what is already true of you. You don’t become holy to get “in Christ.” You become holy because you are in Christ.

Union breaks sin’s dominion; sanctification breaks sin’s habits. “Sin shall not have dominion over you.” Sin is no longer your master. You still fight sin, but you fight as someone who is free, not enslaved. Union joins you to Christ’s death and resurrection; this is the heart of sanctification. Your sin died with Christ. Your old self was crucified.

Sanctification is learning to say “no” to what died.

Paul poured his heart into teaching the church about HOW to walk in NEWNESS OF LIFE. 🦢 Cast aside the old sin nature and embrace a life WITH CHRIST! Regard your sin nature as utterly DEAD so that you can TRULY LIVE WITH CHRIST. Picture it like this: when someone indulges in pornography near a grave, the grave remains indifferent. It feels nothing; it’s dead. The same goes for gluttony. Pile mountains of food on a grave and what happens? Absolutely NOTHING! And greed? Stuff countless bills at a grave and observe — again, NOTHING. The grave holds no allure for lust, pride, food, or money. It stands untouched by temptation. It’s DEAD. This is the essence of being “dead to sin”; live like your sin nature was crucified alongside Jesus Christ. 💀✝️

Romans 6:11: So you too, consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 5:24: Now those who belong to Christ Jesus crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Paul describes this as “putting OFF the old man and putting ON the NEW MAN”…the NEW CREATION that occurred when you received Jesus Christ – NOW AND FOREVER INTERTWINED with the GOD OF LIFE. 🌿💖 Dead to sin, alive in Christ.

Ephesians 4:17: This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, ¹⁸ having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart🧑🏻‍🦯‍➡️; ¹⁹who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

²⁰But you have not so learned Christ, ²¹if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: ²²that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, ²³and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, ²⁴and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Those who belong to Christ have reason to CELEBRATE! 🙌🏻You are a NEW CREATION🦢, totally different than your FORMER SELF! All sins have been BLOTTED OUT by the Cross of Christ✝️, and YOU are now INTERTWINED with JESUS CHRIST FOREVER. This means that when your body dies, YOU will NOT DIE. YOU will have EVERLASTING LIFE IN CHRIST because JESUS CHRIST ROSE FROM THE DEAD and is ALIVE, seated at the right hand of God in Heaven.

Abundant life IN CHRIST — NOW! Eternal life FOREVER!!! What could be better???

Ephesians 2:4: But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, ⁵even when we were dead in trespasses (sins)💀, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), ⁶and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus

This does not mean that the Christian will never sin; however, we have a HELPER in the HOLY SPIRIT who dwells within us. 🕊️ OUR HELPER will direct us away from sin and towards righteous living. HE will convict us of sin and strengthen us to avoid temptation. He will point out danger in our path and will protect us from all evil. OUR HELPER and ADVOCATE also makes constant intercession FOR US in the courts of Heaven because our sin has been BLOTTED OUT by the BLOOD of Jesus Christ. Satan may try to ACCUSE US, but WE cannot be tried twice for the same crime (double jeopardy). God already punished HIS SON for OUR CRIMES. WE are FREE!!!

This NEW LIFE in CHRIST gives ALL BELIEVERS the ABILITY to overcome the SIN NATURE that is still present in the flesh until the last trumpet sounds.

What a reason we have to CELEBRATE! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 HALLELUJAH!!! Our FREEDOM comes from our UNION with CHRIST and is not a license to sin. If we view grace as a license to sin, then we don’t understand grace and may not be truly saved. Salvation is a FREE GIFT from GOD, but we have to UNWRAP the GIFT. 🎁Once saved, we must allow God’s Spirit to SANCTIFY us into GOD’S TRUTH.

Don’t panic if you feel you are not “worthy” or if you still have sin in your life. This work of SANCTIFICATION is not instantaneous. It actually takes a lifetime. Our walk with Christ will look a lot different 10, 20, or 30 years from now as we put off more and more sin and put on more and more of Christ.

When you become SAVED (saying YES to Jesus Christ’s offer of ETERNAL LIFE IN HIM✝️), then simply allow Holy Spirit 🕊️to direct your path and He will complete the good work that He began in you. This is a PROMISE of GOD! It’s not something you have to “work up” on your own. God will do the heavy lifting. All you have to do is draw close to Jesus in FAITH, worship, prayer, and praise, reading His Word, and letting your heart be softened so that you say “NO” to SIN and “YES” to God’s Holy Spirit whenever He directs you. Also, be open to God’s discipline and course correction when He deems it necessary. Trust God’s promises that He will get you where you need to be! 💖🦢

Philippians 1:6:being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;
