Worshipping God in Spirit and in Truth

In the Bible, God promises us that when we draw near to HIM, HE will draw near to us. One of the primary ways we do this is through worship. In the Bible, the Hebrew word translated as “worship” is shachah and literally means to “bow down”. The Greek word for worship is proskuneō, which means “to encounter God and praise Him.”

Worship is the reverential response of creation to the all-encompassing magnificence of God” (McCaulley, E., “Worship,” Lexham Theological Wordbook, ed. Douglas Mangum et al., Lexham Press, 2014).

Psalm 96:9 says, “Worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness; tremble before Him, all the earth.”

Psalm 100:2 says, “Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”

Psalm 29:2 says, “Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.”

Worship is the ultimate purpose for which humans were created. 🤗 Worship is bowing our hearts before our Creator in reverence, awe and wonder. It is how we honor God because He is overwhelmingly deserving of our praise, devotion, and obedience. In worship, we shift our attention away from ourselves and to the One who created us. Worship flows from RELATIONSHIP. God is not only our Creator, but He is also our Shepherd.

These words of Scripture naturally group into three expressions or dimensions of worship:

  1. Homage – Worship as Surrender
  1. Service – Worship as Obedience
  1. Reverence – Worship as Awe

These dimensions—surrender, service, and reverence—form the biblical foundation of true
worship.

What is idolatry?

We are supposed to worship God alone. Idolatry is elevating anything above God in our lives. Idolatry isn’t just bowing to a statue, it’s anything we prioritize above God, and could include career, money, relationships, or ourselves. Even good things can become idols if they take God’s rightful place in our hearts.

“Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.” (1 John 5:21)

Idolatry is a serious threat to our spiritual health. The underlying issue is a heart captivated by something other than God. In the Bible it is portrayed as spiritual adultery, or a betrayal of our Covenant relationship with God. According to the Bible, idolatry can lead to a range of negative consequences, including spiritual coldness/spiritual death, broken relationships, and societal decay. It also leads to emptiness, dissatisfaction, and a distorted view of reality.

  • Spiritual blindness: When we focus on idols, we can become blind to the truth of God’s word (Isaiah 44:18).
  • Moral decay: Idolatry can lead to a decline in moral values and behavior (Galatians 5:19-21).
  • Spiritual Coldness: Robs us of joy and intimacy with Jesus

Idolatry is something that every believer has to fight within themselves because of our sin nature. The solution to idolatry is a renewed focus on God.  It involves cultivating a deep relationship with Him through prayer, Scripture, and worship. It also requires identifying and renouncing the idols in our lives. This is a lifelong process that requires constant vigilance and surrender to God’s will.

Worship God in Spirit and in Truth🕊️

God desires us to have a heart of worship directed towards Him at all times. God also desires us to worship Him in Spirit and in truth. What exactly does that mean?

What does it mean to worship God “in spirit”? 🕊️

True worship must be “in spirit,” 🕊️ that is, engaging the whole heart. 💖Unless there’s a real passion for God, there is no worship in spirit.  Worship in spirit cannot be accomplished through human effort. As Romans 8:9 indicates, “You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, but by the Spirit.” When a person’s heart is transformed by the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit will empower them to direct all of their affections towards God.

To “worship in spirit” is to let the true you speak to the true God.  Worshipping in the spirit is genuine, not fake or mechanical. We have the awesome privilege of coming to Jesus with our fears (Psalm 34:4), anxieties (Philippians 4:6–7), need for cleansing (1 John 1:7–9), true desires (Psalm 37:4), and temptations (Hebrews 4:15–16). As Holy Spirit draws us into worshipping Christ in the spirit, we become more aware of His Presence (Emmanuel – God WITH us).

Worship is designed to unite us with God through our love and admiration, creating a RELATIONAL life. It is ABIDING WITH CHRIST, living in partnership with God as we LISTEN to HIS VOICE and KEEP His commandments. This was God’s design for mankind since the very beginning. God showed His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8). We respond to His sacrificial love for us by loving Him. 💖 We express our love for God by living in relationship with Him, walking by the Spirit (Gal 5:16) and keeping or cherishing His commandments (John 14:15).

We love God because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19) 💖

Praise and worship are words that are often used interchangeably, but there are differences.

Worship is a serious, heart humbling practice that causes us to repent and submit our will and our lives to God. When we do this, we look for God’s direction in our lives. Worship involves prayer, listening, contemplation, the study of God’s Word, and submission. It entails full devotion and trust, asking God to rule over all aspects of our lives.

Praise signifies the joyful recollection of everything that God has done for us. Through Praise, we can honor God’s qualities, like His love, tenderness, grace, humility, and power through music, songs, dance, speaking, or other Creative Gifts.

Both Praise and Worship draw us closer to God, creating an environment where we can hear from Him and are more aware of His Presence. Praise creates a foundation for more in-depth Worship by preparing our hearts and enabling us to express gratitude to God.

Praise frequently opens the door to worship. 💖

What does it mean to worship God “IN TRUTH?” 🕊️

In order for us to worship God in truth we must be informed about who God is and what He is like. Worship must conform to the revelation of God in scripture. Jesus Christ is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE, so worship must revolve around Him. In so doing, Jesus alone becomes LORD of our lives. Worship is not meant to be formed by what FEELS GOOD, but by the LIGHT OF TRUTH.

Worshipping in Truth means aligning our lives to God’s character and His Word. 💖

We also need to worship God sincerely, with honesty and integrity. No masks, no hypocrisy. True worship should not be transactional. In a transactional mindset, there is an implicit expectation of exchange – “If I give this, I’ll get that”. In ancient cultures, false worship and idolatry were usually transactional, where sacrifices or rituals were offered to placate or manipulate “the gods” to receive favor, blessings, or protection. This mindset reduced worship to an exchange, making it about what the worshipper can receive rather than about the worthiness of the One being worshipped.

God initiates relationship and worship is our response, a natural response to God’s love, grace, and kindness.

Sadly, there are many in the modern church who see God as a “transactional God”, BUT…..God is RELATIONAL not TRANSACTIONAL. God’s ways are not our ways; His ways are higher.

God is worthy of our worship and praise, regardless of our circumstances. Even the worst of earthly circumstances are temporary. Jesus Christ has offered us ETERNAL LIFE in HIM. ✝️ As our Creator, Savior, Shepherd and Father, we can TRUST that God’s plan for our lives is far better than anything we could have dreamed up.

Jesus Himself tells us that God is looking for THE TRUE WORSHIPPERS who will WORSHIP HIM IN SPIRIT (WITH THEIR WHOLE HEARTS💖) and IN TRUTH (WITH THEIR WHOLE MINDS💭).

This is OUR PURPOSE. This is WHY we were created. 💖 — to live in RELATIONSHIP with GOD through HIS SON JESUS CHRIST.
